In this day and age, everyone has access to many different styles of music. Musical boundaries are blurring. In my piece, Overture, I employed traditional ABA form Latin American rhythms, some “spicy” chords, irregular time signatures, attention to percussion and piano, and a melody you can remember and combined everything into an energetic piece for wind band. I hope that Overture, written for and premiered by the Dillard High School DCA Wind Orchestra, will be fun to play and listen to for many years to come!
