Inspiration can take many forms. Ideas for a new piece of music come at any point during the day or night. While some ideas are rejected as soon as they arrive, others linger for a long time waiting for the perfect opportunity be explored and turned into a finished piece. The idea behind Step Up! came to me many years ago. While it doesn't have a specific program, I wanted to create a piece that expresses the joy, excitement, apprehension, and uncertainty of facing a new challenge. This challenge could be anything; a new job, school year, life goal, or creating a new piece of art. My focus when composing was writing music that conveyed the energy I associate with these feelings. Writing for the Beckman Chamber Orchestra seemed like the perfect opportunity to bring this idea to life.

I want to thank the World Projects, The Boston Composers' Coalition, the student of the Beckman Chamber Orchestra, and Jim Kollias for the time and effort they have put into making this piece possible.
