String Quintet
The Courtyard was inspired by observations of people passing through a courtyard. Some people held conversations and stayed for a while, others merely passing through, and still some who didn’t seem to be aware of the surroundings. The music presents these passing observations through an increase and decrease of activities. The viola plays an important role in the beginning and end as it represents the observer, merely present but uninvolved in the interactions of the other voices.
