The hooded figure of Death is a regular actor in human creative endeavors. It has been used to warn, scare, and even entertain us. The character of Death may even provide comfort as well. This is the portrayal I wish to evoke in …such as I am you will be because at its heart the piece is a memento mori. It is reminder that death is inescapable. The tolling bells, the driving energy, and forceful declamations in the music give way to moments of calm and rest. These moments are hopefully a welcome repose from a fast and exciting ride. Many artists have presented the figure of Death as a friend. Alfred Rethel's famous etching of the same name is one example. JK Rowling's story of the Three Brothers in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is another. …such as I am you will be is my contribution to a long artistic tradition.
